Bulky Gored Mitten

Step Gauge:  4.5 sts. 6 rows = 1 in.  Size (in.) 3 to 4 4 to 5 5 to 6 6 to 7 7 to 8 8 to 9
A E-wrap cast on_____sts in 1x1 ribbing Knit 1 row at T.3 SL I.  Hang comb and weights. 26 30 34 38 42 46
B At T 3 SL II knit to row_____.  Transfer all sts to MB. 10 12 14 16 18 20
C T. 5 Knit _____rows.  Tie contrast yarn at edges. 8 10 12 14 16 18
D Knit_____rows. 8 12 14 16 22 24
E Set carriage to hold.  On side opposite carriage, place _______needles in hold. 13 15 17 19 21 23
F *Short row by pulling 1 needle on same side as carriage to E position.  K 1 row.  Repeat from * until_____needles left in work.  When you put last needle to HP, immediately put one needle opposite carriage back to D position before knitting row. 3 5 5 5 7 7
G Continue putting one needle to D position opposite carriage each row until all needles are in work.  Carriage will be at left and yarn end in middle of mitten.  Cut yarn, leaving end about twice the width of the whole mitten for sewing.            
H For thumb, pick up edge of stitches between cuff and marker and hang on___needles.  There will be two stitches on center needle.  Put all needles in HPexcept center needle and needle left of center.  Knit 1 row.  Put one needle opposite carriage in D position.  Knit across.  Repeat until 2 stitches remain on each edge.  Put 2 stitches in D position on last 2 rows. 9 11 13 15 17 19
I Knit_____rows.  Double up stitches.  Knit 1 row.  Take off on yarn end, leaving it long enough to sew side of thumb and hand. 7 9 11 13 15 17
