TUBULAR NEWBORN HAT

With Adjustments for Larger Sizes

Lightweight yarn like Solo, Tamm 3-ply, or 2 strands of 2/24

Tensions as listed in pattern are for Brother machines.  Others will need to adjust so both beds are knitting at same gauge.

On Brother ribber, put slide lever on I throughout.  Do not set the ribber to half pitch.

Between 24-0-25, pull every 4th needle to working position on the main bed.  Put every 4th ribber needle into working position, centering them between the main bed needles.  At Tension 0/0, knit one row with ravel cord.  Hang ribber cast-on comb and 2 large ribber weights.  Set carriages for circular knitting.  Raise tension to 2/2.    With main yarn, knit one round (2 passes of carriage).

RC 000.  Pull every other needle on both beds to working position.  Make sure you don't have 2 empty needles next to each other.  If necessary, you can add needles in the next round.  At Tension 4/4, knit  to RC 011.  Carriage will now be on the right.

RC000.  Pull remaining needles to working position.  Here is where you are more likely to have 2 empty needles next to each other at the ends, so use 2 rounds to get them all into position.  At Tension 8/8, knit 125 rounds (250 on row counter).

Transfer stitches on both beds to every other needle.  Do NOT transfer all to main bed.  At Tension 4/4 knit 5 rounds (10 rows on row counter).  Cut main yarn, leaving a long tail.  Change to scrap yarn and knit at least 10-12 rows.  Drop from machine.  (If you prefer, you can take the stitches off with a double-eye needle, but it's easier to use the scrap yarn when taking them off both beds.)

Use yarn tail to pick up the last row of main yarn and gather.  Remove the scrap yarn.  Pull out the  ravel cord.  Gently pull the yarn at the beginning to gather.  There should not be any open stitches, but check to make sure.  Tuck one end inside the hat and roll up a cuff.

For a larger child size, cast on 31-0-30.  When all needles are in working position knit 150 rounds (300 on the row counter).

For an adult-size hat, cast on 34-0-35.  When all needles are in working position, knit 200 rounds (400 on the row counter).
